Oregon Coaching Job - Who's in the Running For the Oregon Coaching Job?

coaching leadership development

There are many candidates for coaching jobs in Oregon. Some coaches hire for short-term positions, while other coaches stay on the job for a long time. Mullens is looking for a long-term coach. Taggart's career was over and Cristobal was seduced by an attractive suitor who scared away Oregon officials.

Willie Taggart

Oregon was one among many schools interested in Taggart's services this offseason. Taggart was offered $20 Million over five-years to coach the Ducks. Taggart turned down the offer and was offered the Florida State job. Taggart however felt strongly about the possibility of rebuilding UO. According to reports, he also rejected the $30 million offer from Florida State.

Taggart, who was rejected by the NFL, began his coaching career. He spent time at Stanford, Stanford under Jim Harbaugh (University of South Florida), and Oregon. His philosophy emphasizes excellence and discipline. The first priority is accountability. He said that he encourages his players to strive for greatness.

Willie Aranda

Aranda, who was named head coach of the Baylor Bears in 2020, has a proven track record. After winning the LSU national title in 2019, Aranda moved to Baylor and led the Bears to an 11-1 record, the Big 12 championship, and a total of 63 wins. Born in California, he attended Cal Lutheran and went on to become a defensive coordinator at Utah State.

After Mario Cristobal's departure to Miami, Oregon is looking for a new coach. In a Duck Territory podcast, we looked at some of the potential coaching candidates. We evaluated each candidate and discussed the pros/cons to hiring someone with coaching experience from the Pac-12.

Justin Wilcox

The University of Oregon looks very different than it did when Wilcox joined the University in late 1990s. The expectations have been high and facilities have changed. Mario Cristobal (the last coach at the school), won 10 games this year, including a win in Ohio State. Although he won 10 games this season, he was criticised for failing to win more. Mark Helfrich (the former coach) was also a native Oregonian. Both were fired after the season.

The Ducks are currently interviewing candidates for the position of head coach. Bob Canzano is the Oregon athletic director and has spoken to Wilcox as well as two other candidates. One of these candidates is in NFL. The Ducks are keen to hire a coach as soon as possible. Early signing day is around the corner, and every minute that passes increases the chances that a recruit will be drawn to another program.

Mario Cristobal

Mario Cristobal has been appointed head football coach at University of Miami. He has previously coached at Florida International University. He played college football for the Miami Hurricanes, where he won two national championships as an offensive tackle. He was awarded First-Team All-Big East Conference honors in 1992 and 1993. He received his University of Miami degree in 1993. In 2001, he earned his master's degree.

Cristobal is expected take over a struggling program. The Hurricanes are just 7-5, and their head coach, Greg Diaz, has only won 21 games during his three seasons in South Beach. After Miami's resignation of Blake James (the athletic director), Diaz's security as a coach was question for some time. Miami is scheduled to play Washington State in the Sun Bowl later this month.
