There are many candidates for coaching jobs in Oregon. Some coaches hire for short-term positions, while other coaches stay on the job for a long time. Mullens wants a long-term coach. Taggart was a one and done deal, and Cristobal was lured by a suitor that scared off Oregon officials.

Willie Taggart

Oregon was one of several programs interested in hiring Taggart this offseason. Taggart was reported to have been offered $20million over five years as a coach for the Ducks. Taggart declined the offer and was instead offered the Florida State position. Taggart however felt strongly about the possibility of rebuilding UO. He also rejected the $30 Million offer by Florida State.

Taggart started his coaching career after being rejected for the NFL job. He taught at Stanford under Jim Harbaugh as well as at Western Kentucky. His philosophy is focused upon excellence and discipline. He believes accountability should be the first priority. He said he urged his players to "chase greatness."

Willie Aranda

Aranda, who was named head coach of the Baylor Bears in 2020, has a proven track record. After winning the 2019 national title at LSU, he relocated to Baylor where he led the Bears' 11-1 record and won the Big 12 title. Born in California, he attended Cal Lutheran and went on to become a defensive coordinator at Utah State.

After Mario Cristobal's departure to Miami, Oregon is looking for a new coach. In a recent Duck Territory podcast, we took a look at some of the coaching candidates. Each candidate was evaluated by Sportsline. Then, we discussed the pros & cons of hiring someone from the Pac-12.

Justin Wilcox

The University of Oregon is vastly different from the time Wilcox was hired as a professor in the late 1990s. Facilities have improved and expectations are high. Mario Cristobal (the last coach at the school), won 10 games this year, including a win in Ohio State. Although he won 10 games this season, he was criticised for failing to win more. Mark Helfrich, the former coach, was also an Oregonian. Both were fired after the season.

The Ducks are interviewing potential candidates to be their head coach. In addition to Wilcox, Oregon athletic director Bob Canzano has also been in contact with two other candidates, one of whom is in the NFL. The Ducks desire to quickly hire a new coach. The Ducks are eager to hire a coach as soon as possible. Every minute that goes by increases the likelihood that a recruit will move on to another program.

Mario Cristobal

Mario Cristobal is now the University of Miami's football head coach. He has also coached at Florida International University (FIU) and Oregon State University. He played college soccer for the Miami Hurricanes. As an offensive tackle, he won two national championships. He was awarded First-Team All-Big East Conference honors both in 1991 and 1992. He graduated from University of Miami in 1993. He then went on to receive his master's in 2001.

Cristobal will be taking over a program in dire need of help. The Hurricanes' record is 7-5. Their head coach Greg Diaz has only won 21 of his three seasons in South Beach. After the resignation of Blake James, Miami's athletic director, Diaz's job security was in doubt. Miami is set to face Washington State in this month's Sun Bowl.
